Step 1: Class 3 Medical (Basic health exam that checks vision, hearing, and general health. Expect to pay $70-170)
- Go to medxpress.faa.gov and create an account. Complete registration to get an MID number.
- Then go to designee.faa.gov.

- Choose Designee Type: AME
- Enter your state
- Select Second/Third Class AME
- Call one of the doctors listed and say you need a Class 3 FAA Medical Exam. Bring MID number to appointment.
Step 2: Purchase Drone
- You’ll need the Serial Number from the drone to fill out the rest of the paperwork.
Step 3: Decide if registering drone as individual or LLC (LLC Recommended)
Step 4: Get Part 107 (Allows you to fly a drone for commercial purposes. Expect to pay about $175)
- Study via our recommend course or FAA provided materials.
- Create an IACRA account and obtain an FAA Tracking Number (FTN).
- Schedule your test at an FAA-approved Knowledge Testing Center.
- Take and pass the Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG) knowledge test.
- After passing the test, login to IACRA and complete the application process.
- Once your application is approved, you’ll get an email with instructions to print your temporary certificate until your permanent certificate arrives by mail.
Step 5: State Pesticide License (Allows you to apply chemicals from the air with a drone)
- Every state has different requirements, but you’ll need a General and Aerial license. Most states universities offer a one-day course where you can study and take the test all in the same day but there are some other options available.
Step 6: Register Drone
- Drones under 55 lbs: complete the Part 107 registration process and register via FAA DroneZone
- Drones over 55 lbs: The FAA requires multiple forms, documents and specific details.
Step 7: 44807 Exemption (Allows you to fly drones over 55lbs)
- The 44807 exemption is filed directly with the FAA. The FAA requires a large amount of documentation in this process.
Step 8: Part 137 (Allows you to aerially dispense economic poisons)
- It requires having an approved 44807 exemption, a registered drones and a few other things.
